Why rebuild the coral reef?

EXCEPTIONAL BIODIVERSITY

they are home to more than 25% of all marine life species.

COASTAL PROTECTION
they run along more than 150,000 kilometers of coastline in more than 100 countries and territories.

FOOD IMPORTANCE
More than 500 million people depend on coral reefs

ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE
the total annual net benefit of coral reefs worldwide is $29.8 billion.

A TOURIST WEALTH
Reefs are often the essential element in the economy of the tropical regions that shelter them.

A MEDICAL FUTURE
Coral organisms are of great interest in the search for treatments for certain cancers or cell aging. In addition, due to its nature very close to our bones, the coral skeleton used since 1970 for bone grafts, appears to be a promising avenue for bone regeneration.

Why is the coral reef degraded?

Coral reefs are degraded by an accumulation of threats resulting from human activities. Overfishing, pollution and coastal development top the list of chronic stressors. Others are dredged or sandblasted for their limestone or to improve access and safety of navigation.

Additionally, long-term global changes (rising sea temperatures and CO2 levels), storms, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions also affect coral reefs.
